PREFACE.

This, the third published volume of Watertown Records, con- tains the proceedings of the town from March, 1727, to February,

1745-

The births, marriages and deaths include the years 1738 to 1822, and complete Volume II. of " Vital Statistics " as recorded by the town clerk. About twenty pages of " Purposes of Marriage " found recorded on loose leaves at the end of the town clerk's volume dating from 1792 to 1822 have also been printed, and will be found at the end of the volume.

In obfervance of a preceipt (to us directed) from the High Sherrifi of his Majesties County of Midd" :

In his Majesties Name You are hereby required to warn the freeholder's and other Inhabitants within the Eafterly & Wefterly Precinds in Watertown aboves**, who are Quallifyed According to Law to vote in the Choice of a Reprefentative, to Meet at the publick Meeting houfe in the Eaft Precindt in s'* Town, on Mon- day the Sixth day of May Next Enfuing y^ date hereof, at one of y' clock in the After Noon of s** day to Choofe a Reprefentative or Reprefentatives to Serve for and reprefent y*" Town of Watertown, At a great & General Court Appointed to be Conviened, held & keept for his Majesties Service at y* Court houfe in Bofton on Wednefday y* Twenty Ninth day of may next enfuing the date hereof.

At Said Meeting Dea : Nathan Fiske was Chofen by the Maj'. part of the Voters To Reprefent y^ Town of Watertown at a great and General Court to be holden at Bofton on y'^ 29 day of May Currant. 1728 At a General Town Meeting of the Freeholders

Put to Vote whether the Town will receive their proportion of y* Sixty Thoufand pounds Bills of Credit belonging to Watertown. And y'= Vote past in the Affarmitive.

Voted and Choofe M' Jonas Bond L' Samuel Stearns & L' Joseph CooUidge to be Truftees for Watertown to receive s'' Towns proportion of y^ 60000 £ Bills of Credit.

Put to Vote whether the s"^ Truftees Shall Lett s^ Bills of Credit and in leting them, Not to lett to any perfon under Ten pounds nor to any perfon above Twenty pounds.

And y^ Vote paft in y^ Affirmative. Put

Put to whether the Town are Willing, that if there Should not appear perfons to take of Said Money According to y" Dire6tions already given within a fortnight after the time Appointed by the Truftees to Lett s'' Bills, that then y*^ Truftee Shall Let out what money remains According to their best Difcretion.

Livermore, s'' Land Lying on the Weft Side of y" Town highway about Thirty rods Northweft from Allen Flaggs Dwelling houfe. Dated at Watertown the 4* day of May 1728.

At S"* Meeting Nathanael Bright late Conftable of S'* Town Laid an Ace' of John Kings Rates in his Lift of Rates wh* were Committed to him to Colle6l in y*" year 1724. before y^ Town; Complaining y' y* S"^ King was gone before y^ rates was made & defired %^ Kings rates Amounting to Twenty Shillings & 2'^ might Sink. And the Town Voted y' S'* Kings Rates Should Sinck in cafe he Never came back So as y' S'' Rates Might be got.

At this Meeting the SelecSlmen ordred the Town Treafurer To pay to M' Sam" : Jenifon five pounds (of that money due to the Town from Daniel Whetney) in full For looking After Elnathan Whitney. [6]

At S"* Meeting the Seleftmen Agreed to Approbate but one perfon

to keep a publick or licenced houfe in Watertown viz Tho^ :

Learned. And to Make a return to the Sefsions as followeth.

To the Hon'able his Maj" : Justices of y" Gen" Seffions of the peace for his Majesties County of Midd". The Sele6lmen of Watertown are humbly of Oppinion that one Tavern or Licenced houfe in S'* Town is Sifficient for the Accom- madating of Travilers, and the Intereft of the Town, Accordingly the Sele6tmen Se caufe to Approbate M' Thomas Learned for this prefent Year, and No other. ^ ^^^, ^ ^^ ^^^ Seledmen.

Aug^' : 12 on the 12"^ day of August 1728. At L' Richard CoolHdges the Selectmen being informed that one Mary Knap w"" a Child or Children was come into Watertown who came (by Enformation) Laft from Roxbury in y^ County of Soffulk. y'= Seled; ordered the Clerk to write a Warrant diredled to Joseph Har- rington Conftable to Warn S'^ Mary Knap & Child or Children to depart out of S^ Town forthwith, they refufing to Accept of her as an Inhabitant of s>^ Town, which was done Accordingly as recorded page y^ 7*.

The School being Vacant y* Seledlmen defire L'. Rich'' Cool- lidge & Dea Thomas Livermore to Endeavour to procure a Sutable PTon to keep y'' Grammer and Englifsh School in Town.

At S** Meeting y^ Seledmen Appointed A Town Meeting and ordred the Clerk to write Warrants to the Conftables of s^ Town in y^ following words. To the Conftables of Watertown. You are hereby ordred to warn the freeholders and other Inhabitants within the Eafterly & Wefterly Precin<5ls of s*^ Town who are Quallifyed According to Law to Vote in Town Affairs to Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in the Eaft Precin6t of s"* Town on Monday the 26"" day of August Currant at Two of y^ Clock in the after noon of s^ day for y*" ends following : firft to know the Towns Mind whether they will choofe a Commite to Seek out and Survey y* Two Thoufand Acres of Land Granted by y* General Court to Watertown and Wefton, or whether they will Sell their Intereft in s** Land. Secondly To know the mind of y*" Town, whether for the future they will meet by turns in the publick Meeting houfes in y' Town to Manage y*" bufinefs of Town Meetings. The Seledmen of s'' Town are informed that there is one Mary Knap w* her Child or Children come into Watertown Sometime in the Later end of July Laft past who came (by Enformation) Laft from the Town of Roxbury in y^ County of Suffolk and Now ref ides in the dwelling houfe of Jofeph Grout of s"* Town of Watertown. She being und"^ Such Circumbftances y* Sele(5lmen refufe to Accept of her & Child or Children to be Inhabitants in s"" Watertown fearing She may prove a Charge to y" Town.

You are therefore in his Maj"^ : Name hereby required forth with to warn the said Mary Knap with her Child or Children forthwith to depart out of Watertown and No longer to Abide therein the Sele6tmen refuiing to Accept of y"^ s'l Mary &c to be Inhabitants in S'^ Town, hereof fail not and Make return of this Warrant & Your doings thereon unto the Seledlmen or Town Clerk forthwith. 1. Put to Vote whether the Town will Choofe a Committee to Seek out and Surveigh (with Such Gentlemen as Wefton Shall Joyne w* S'* Com""^) the Two Thoufand Acres of Land Granted by y^ General Court to Watertown and Wefton. And y^ Vote past in the Affirmative.

2. Put to Vote whether the Town will choofe Two perfons to be a Com""' for y^ end above s**. And y* Vote past in Affarmative.

3. Voted and Choofe M' Tho' Learned and M' John Cutting to be a Comm'^^ : for the ends above said.

4. Put to Vote whether the Town do Impower the Committe aboves'* (with Such as Wefton Shall Joyne with them) To procure a Surveigher and chain men to be und' oath to Surveigh y^ aboves^ Two Thoufand Acres of Land, and procure a plat of S"* Land und' y*^ Surveighers hand and return y^ Same to y^ General Court at y* Next full Sefsion for their Conformation.* And y^ Vote past in y* affirmative.

5. Put to Vote whether it be the mind of the Town to Meet by turns in the Publick Meeting houfes in the Town for the future to Manage the bufinefs of Town Meetings.

At a Meeting of the Seledlmen of Watertown (at M' Learneds) on the 26"" day of August 1728.

The Selectmen Appointed L' Richard Collidge and M' Thomas Coollidge to View the old pound and make Sale thereof and make Report of y*" Sale thereof to y^ Selectmen at their Next Meeting.

At S'* Meeting the Seledlmen ordred the Town Treafurer to pay out of y^ Town Treafurey the Sum of Ninety Two pounds Eight Shillings to Jer : Allen Esq' Province Treafurer which is Watertowns Third fifth of the 50000 pound Loan.

At a Meeting of y^ Sele6lmen of Watertown at y^ Houfe of Deacon Nathan Fisk's on the 30* day of Septemb' 1728.

the Wife of Obadiah Coollidge defired an order from the Seledl-

men to receive her household goods w'" were lodged "^ order of

y' Sele6lmen at the Houfse of her Mother Rachel Goddards in

order to remove with her Hufband to Malborough, there being

Some probable profpeck of their Living together there and gain- ing a Comfortable Maintenance under this View the Selectmen are Inclined S"^ goods be delivered, and Acording order the Clerk to write an Order directed to M'' Rachal Goddard & Ebenez' Goddard to deliver to Obadiah Coollidge and his wife their houfhold Goods which by ord' of y^ Seledtmen were put under their Care. which was done as fellow's.

Watertown Sep' 30* 1728.

To M" Rachal Goddard and Ebenezer Goddard, whereas the Sele6lmen of S** Town by their Ord' of April 3"^ 1727 ordred y^ re- moval of Obadiah CooUedge Wife and Houlhold Goods to Your houfe to continue there under your care till further order of y^ Seledmen. S'* Obadiah CoolUdges Wife defireing of y^ Sele6lmen that she may receive her goods again in order to remove w"* her Hufband to Malborough, their being a profpeck of their gaining a Comfortable Maintenance there, under this view the Sele6l- men are Inclined that y^ s"* Obadiah Coolledge & Wife Should have their goods again. And Accordingly you the S*^ Rachal & Ebenezer Goddard are hereby ordred to deliver y* s'^ Obadiah Coolledge & Wife their houfhold Goods (which were lodged in your houfe by order of y^ Sele6lmen as afores'^) when they Se caufe to call for them in ord' for removall.

At S'' Meeting the Sele6lmen ordred the Clerk to write a War- rant directed to Joseph Harrington Conftable of S'* Town To warn one Mary Holland (a young woman) to depart out s"* Town who came Laft from the Town of Framingham Sometime (by Informa- tion) in the month of Sep' or 06tb'. Laft paft who refides at the dwelling houfe of John Stouels in S** Town y^ Seledlmen Refufing to Accept of her to be an Inhabitant of S'' Town. Which was done as foUoweth.

The Selectmen of s^ Town being Informed y' there is one Mary Holland alias Mary Holley a young woman come to Dwell in Watertown who came Laft from y*" Town of Framingham in s'' County (by information) some time in Sep' or Octob' Laft Paft and Now refides at the Dwelling houfe of of M' John Stouells in s'* Watertown her Circumftances are Such that the Selectmen Refuse to Accept of her to be an Inhabitant of Watertown.

By Virtue of y^ above written Warrant I have Warned the Above named Mary Holland forth with to Depart out of Water- town & no longer therein to Abide.

At S'* Meeting the Sele6lmen ordred the Clerk to Write a Warrant Directed to Joseph Harrington Conftable of S"* Town to Warn all the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of Watertown (the other Conftable being ill) who are Quallifyed to Vote in Town Affairs to Meet at the Publick Meeting houfe in the Eafterly Precin6l in S*^ Town on Monday the 23 day of December Currant at 10 y*" Clock in the fore None for the Ends Set forth in the Warrant which is as followeth.

1. To hear the Town Treafurers Ace'.

2. To grant a Town Rate or Afsefsment for to pay Town Creditors their dues, the Support of y^ Grammer and Englifh School in y^ Town, the Support of the Poor &c.

Learneds. on the 12'^ day of October 1730. in order to View the great Bridge in S'' Watertown to Se w'. is Necefsary to be done to Secure S'' Bridge, the Seledmen of both Towns having Viewed S'' Bridg they Concluded that it is Necefsary to procure New Plank for one piere, and to mend the other peere with the old plank & whereas New plank can't prefently be procured, and it being of Necefsitie y' Some thing be Speedly done to Said Bridge, M' George Harrington being prefent. Informed the Sele6lmen that he had Some plank that would do to mend the Bridge for the Prefent y'' Seledmen Defired S'' Harrington to bring S'' plank and to mend the Bridg with them where it is moft Necefsary to be mended, the Seleftmen Agreed alfo that there be a knee or knees fixt at the End of some of the String pieces where they want Strengthing and that this work be done forthwith, the Seledmen alfo Defired M". At this Meeting M' Samuel Pierce Jonas Bond and Jofeph Mason who were Appointed by y^ Select- men to take an Inventory of y^ Widow Webbs Moveables which were at M' Thomas Coollidges, Made report to y' Seledlmen that they had Done Said Service, and Exhibeted a Sciddal of y*" Same and there Apprizement to the Sele6tmen, as may Appear by S** Sciddal under their hands on file.

After viewing of S** Bridge to Se what is Necefsary to be Done for Securing the Same We find it Necefsary that some thing be Done to repair S'^ Bridge for the Security of it and the Safty of Pafsangers, M' W" Williams being prefent, the Seleftmen Defired the S^ Williams to undertake to Do forthwith what is Necefsary to be done for the Repairing of Said Bridge for the Prefent. Complaint being made to the Seleftmen by Some of y^ Creditors of y^ Town that they are keept out of their dues, to their damage by reafon that the Conftables are delinquant in Colle6ling y" Afsef- ments Committed to them, and making up with the Town Treaf- urer. The Sele6lmen taking this Matter in to confideration, Ordred the Town Treafurer to Sue Such Conftables as are Delin- quent to the Next Inferior Court.

The Sele6lmen are Informed that there is one James Shurlo and one Samuel Shanham with their families come to Dwel in Water- town and Now refide in Cap'. At Said Meeting the Sele6lmen Agreed with Jabez Stratton to take the Widow Webb for the Space of one year from the Date of this Meeting and Look well after her and provide for her Meat Drink Walhing and Lodging dureing Said Term ; And He y^ S"" Stratton to have as a reward therefor from the Town Three Shillings & Six pence per weak ; And if the Said Widow is able to Do any work of any Valine, Said Stratton therefor to provide Such things for the s'^ Widow as She may want, And to give Ace', thereof to the Sele6lmen, and if Extraordeney charge Shall Arife by reafon of Sicknefs or otherwife Said Stratton to be reafonably Satisfyed by the Town therefor.
