rr^HE collection of pedigrees ijriiited in the present volume is thus described in the Catalogue of the Harleian Manuscripts: —
Harl. MS. 1544. An Heraldical Boole in fol. for the most part written & tricked b}' Mr. Richard Mundy ; containing,
1. An alphabetical Table of Surnames, directing to the ensuing-
Descents & Amies. At the beginning.
2. The Visitation of Hampshire, made bj- Thomas Benolt Clarenceulx
in Anno 1530.
3. Enlarged with the Visitation of the same County made by Eobert
Cooke Clarenceulx, A.D. 1575.
4. Both which are continued with the Visitation made by John
Phillipot Somersett in Anno 1622. Most part then don, and finished in Anno 1634.
Obserrables in this Book may be
5. Armes of many of the Hampshire Gentry, in Trick.
6. Many Addit[i]ons & Enlargements made to the Descents, by
Mr. Mundy, the Collector thereof ; as also by Mr. Latton of Grayes Inue, & Mr. Dale Suffolk-Herald (both whom have diligently perused Mr. Mundy's Books) and by others whose hands I do not as yet know.
7. Here is a Pedegree of Fysher of Chilton Condover said to be
made, registred, & allowed, and is also subscribed by Robert Cooke Clareneeux, 10th May A.D. 1573, according- to the true Evidences & Charters of John Fysher Esq. wherein he is made to be the Heir of Walter de Merton, and of several other Families, whose Armes he quartered, with two or three Quotations, about that great Man. But Mr. Mundy hath sett down the Armes of the said Walter de Merton, as they remained in his College at Oxford (which are plainly different from those in the Quarterings), and the Note following, "This John Fysher was disclaymed Anno 1575. But since, thes Petegree was sett out ffor him by Clar. Cooke." 58.

8. At the Descent of FasLiri, Mr. Mundy wrote this Note, "Hee payd
the Fee of 20s. and promised to make Proffe of his Armes at Michelmas-Terme ; but he was disclaymed the 4th of June 1576."

The title at the beginning of the MS., before the Aliihabetical Table of Surnames, is repeated in paragraphs 2, 3, and 4 of the description in the catalogue, as given above. It has also been used tliroughout the present volume, though probably the contents are better described on the title-page as being Pedigrees from the Visitations made in the years 1530, 1575, and 1622—1634.
It is not easy to distinguish the additions to the Visitation Pedigrees made by Richard Mundy ; those by other hands are here noted, and from the different style of tricking, the arms added may easily be distinguished.
It will be noticed that there are two very similar Pedigrees of Stewkley ; if not an oversight, possibly the intended additions to one or both were never made.
The ArQis of the Hampshire Gentry in trick have been placed at the end of the volume, instead of at the beginning as in the original MS.
Many of the quarterings are named in Harl. MS. 1544; and all additions by the Editor are printed in italics within square brackets.
