Classmates, we can hardly realize Four long years have by us passed.
We have all been friends most faithful, And our parting’s hard at last.
Step by step we’ve climbed the ladder. Mingling work with all our fun.
Till at last we’re on the top round Feeling that our goal we’ve won.
%
Now our High School days are over. And our friendships sadly end.
Each must choose a task much harder And upon himself depend.
But we each will climb life’s ladder. And our duties never shun Till at last we’re on the top round Feeling that Our Goal we’ve won.

The cheering squad ior the season 1947-48 was composed of six seniors and five juniors, each of whom did a splendid job. The seniors chosen were: Joan Balezentes, Elaine Somers, Marilyn Golan, Barbara Hildebrandt, Marie Garvey, and Gloria Chaktirmanian. The juniors were Alice Dudash, Helen Petroccione, Ann Smith, Arlene Devine, and Joan Lynch. Joan Balezentes was chosen as head-cheerleader, with Elaine Somers and Alice Dudash as her assistants.
This is only the second year that the cheering squad has been made up entirely of girls and we were still “on trial” as cheerleaders of L. H. S.
We shall never forget the time we were invited to witness the Boston University-Golgate game in Boston. Making the trip with our band, and together with some thirty-two bands from other schools, we put on a most colorfid and beautiful displav.
Idle football banquet was also an event which will live long in our memor)'. We felt very proud as we walked up to receive our sweaters, and we felt that it certainly was a job well done.
Our success was due wholly to the tireless elforts and enefuring patience of our advisor. Miss Bruce, and to her we give our heartiest thanks.
dM Mr. Kennedy, Air. Devlin, and the members of the Athletic Association, we wish to ex- jiress our gratitude for helping us get our new uniforms and awarding us our sweaters.
We would also like to thank Air. Satilt for the time he spent in helping us with our songs.
It was a great honor and privilege being your Ciaptain for 1948, and it is one year that will always live in my memory.

On Wednesday, April 21, the Lawrence High School Baseball Team will endeavor to atone for the setback suffered in 1947. With the names Ruffen, Fenton, Kershaw, Hickey, McGregor and Veilleux missing from the lineup the task ahead of the team is a difficult one. They will have to compete against potentially strong teams, such as Salem, English and the defending State Cham¬ pions, Lynn Classical.
ALe will, of course, miss the advice and direction of a great coach, Mark Devlin, who along with the above mentioned has built character, and along with his ideal sincerity has always taught fair play both on and off’ the field. Our main pur¬ pose in the coming campaign is to regain the Essex County Championship, which we have won more than any other of our competitors.
We are starting out with a new man at the helm, James Jordan, a man full of the same basic feelings toward fair play as the man whom he succeeds. He has served from 1943 as a competent and capable assistant, and now that he has assumed the role as head coach of Lawrence High School, Athletics will be well coached in every respect.
Coach Jordan will field many new faces against a strong Lynn Classical aggre¬ gation on opening day. The battery shapes up as the strongest in the league with Callagy, Kowalski, Waisgerber on the mound, and Captain Edmund Samra behind the plate. Callagy, a curve ball artist, is noted for his expert control. He does not stop with his pitching. Many a time he has assumed the role of a pinch-hitter, and may be used in the outfield when he is not pitching. Next on the list is Richard Kowalski, a strong armed pitcher, with a blazing fast ball. Dick has been looked over by many major league scouts, and twice has been selected to represent this section in the Hearst Finals at Braves Field. Dick’s best weapon is his fast ball, which is said to be on top of the batter before he knows it. He is also working on a fork ball, and a change of pace. This, coupled with his will to win, should make him a tower of strength of this year’s team. Last but not least on this pitching staff is Joe Waisgerber. Joe was the center on last year’s football team, and can be called on at any time to give a dependable performance. The catching duties will be held down by Captain Edmund Samra. Ed was last year’s regular third baseman, until the regular catcher, Richard Hickey, was forced out of the lineup by an injured hand. Here Ed stepped in, and did a very commendable job. Ed also hits that long- ball, and can break up many close ball games with one swing of his bat.
Now a swing around the infield. At first base a bitter battle will be waged between Sam Lopiano and Donald Shycoff. This position was evacuated by last year’s Captain Tom Ruffen. Lopiano is a tall, lean senior, and plays the bag like a real veteran. His adversary will be Don Shycoff, a good man with the stick. Don has the knack of hitting the ball to left, which is usually left un¬ guarded. At second base is Jack Dean, a veteran for the past three seasons and one of the five regulars returning. Over at shortstop two more aspirants will strive to gain a regular berth on opening day. Eirst on the agenda is diminu¬ tive Jim Campagnone, a speed merchant on the bases and an extremely powerful hitter in comparison to his small stature. At his defense position his greatest asset is his ability to cover enormous ground, and make a difficult throw look relatively easy. In order to gain a regular berth he will have to compete against Erank Calabrese an up-and-coming Sophomore, who fields his position like a natural. At third base is Louis Sarcione, a backbone in the inner defense. Lou

took over the “hot corner” last year when Captain Samra moved behind the plate. His specialty is punching line drives through the infield before the opposi¬ tion has time to react.
With the graduation of last year’s veteran outfield, the task of developing a new trio of hard hitting fly-chasers will be a difficult one. With the opening game less than three weeks away, Coach Jordan will probably select his starting outfield from the following: Arthur Sirmaian, James McMahon, Emil Vitale, Dan Donovan, Don Walworth, and Anthony (Mort) Vitale.
With all the above mentioned in mind, I am sure that with grim determina¬ tion we will meet our adversaries on the field, defeat them, and bring to l.aw- rence High School, the honor which she so justly deserves.

^LAWRENCE 0 Manning Bowl, Lynn SAUGUS 12
Lawrence, with only ten practice sessions behind them, could not compete with the stronger Saugus eleven who had spring training and late summer sessions. The closest Lawrence came to a T. D. was when Gagnon took the l^all on a hand off from Kowalski, down to the 34-yard stripe. The Saugus line held, and gained the ball on downs. A few plays later they made a T. D. Canty and Kiichar starred as defense line¬ men.
^LAWRENCE 6 Memorial Stadium, Lowell ST. JOSEPH’S OF MANCHESTER 0
Two days after the fracas with Saugus, Lawrence met St. Joseph’s. Captain Langevin won the toss, and elected to receive. Sarcione caught the pigskin on the twenty and was promptly smacked by the St. Joseph’s ends. A tumble put Cathedral on the Lawrence three-yard line. In the second period a pass from Callagy to Spizer, and a plunge through center by LoPiano set up a T. D. for Lawrence. Callagy took the ball on a hand off through guard for the only score.
LAWRENCE 6 Memorial Stadium, Lawrence ST. JAMES 0
Lawrence’s Callagy, Ryley, and Sarcione sparked the team to their only T. D. Nissi of St. James did some good ball carrying but was stopped continuously by the Lawrence line. Lawrence worked the ball down to the goal line on a series of pa.sses to Gregorwicz and Vitale. Callagy then took the ball over on a line plunge.
LAWRENCE 0 Memorial Stadium, Laivrence MANCHESTER 39
Although the Lawrence line held together pretty well, the Manchester boys swept the ends, and passed at will. Callagy, McGurren, Sarcione and Jasinski teamed together to gain quite a number of yards but the blocking and running of tbe Manchester team plus the successful completion of many passes deflated Lawrence.
LAWRENCE 0 Memorial Stadium, Lawrence LYNN ENGLISH 13
Lawrence displayed fine offensive and defensive football against Lynn. The fast, shifty Whelan of Eng¬ lish was stopped continuously by Gregorowicz, Vitale, and Spizer while Kuchar and Wooles, plus Waisger- ber playing secondary, teamed to knock off the interference. LoPiano and Jasinski starred offensively.
LAWRENCE 7 Leominister LEOMINISTER 33
Lawrence’s poor pass defense, and sluggish offense cost them a bitter defeat. Mort Vitale and Gerald Callagy sparked the offensive play for the Blue and White. Waisgerber and Fleming starred on the defense. Gagnon scored the only T. D. for Lawrence.
LAWRENCE 2 Nashua NASHUA 19
McGurren and Callagy managed to carry out a screen pass which caught Nashua on their heels, and Lawrence brought the ball down to Nashua’s three-yard line. The Nashua line managed to hold and took the ball on downs. In an attempt to kick out of danger the Nashua back was rushed and he' stepped out of the safety zone, resulting with two points. This was Lawrence’s only score.
LAWRENCE 21 Memorial Stadiu7n, Laxuremce CENTRAL CATHOLIC 20
Lawrence opened the scoring in the first quarter when Callagy punted to Central’s 40, and LoPiano recovered. Callagy then threw a pass to LoPiano for the first T. D. On the kick-off Raymond took the ball on the 30 and went for a T. D., but they missed the point. Central Catholic kicked short and after five plays Lawrence was on the goal line. A pass from Callagy to Gregorowicz made it 14-6. Wooles blocked a punt on Central’s 20, and Lawrence made another T. D. Durkin took the ball on the kick-off, and ran for a score, making it 21-13. Lawrence was on Central Catholic’s one-foot line when the half ended. Sexton heaved a pass to Morris in the last minutes of play for a score. Lawrence had 15 first downs to Cen¬ tral Catholic’s four, and 164 yards to Central Catholic’s 45. There were no penalties in this game.
LAWRENCE 14 Manning Bowl, Lyxin PEABODY 13
Lawrence trailed at the half, 6-0. Callagy threw a pass to LoPiano from Peabody’s 30. LoPiano car¬ ried it to the eleven and then another to LoPiano reached the 2-yard stripe. Callagy plunged over. Sarcione took a pass from Callagy for the point. St. Paul then scored for the Tanners. Emilio Vitale snagged a pass, Callagy on Lawrence’s 39 to Vitale on Peabody’s 35. Callagy took the ball over from the one-foot line. The pressure was on Bob Gagnon but he came through with a good conversion to win the game.

Callagy scored the first T. D. in the second period when he ran 78 yards for a T. D. In th e third he heaved a 20-yard pass to Gregorowicz for a score. LoPiano plucked a 12-yard pass early in the fourth pe¬ riod and went over standing up. Stella, Wooles, and Dowe played brilliant ball in the middle of the line, and Spizer, A. Vitale, E. Vitale, Carey, Eleming, Donovan and Gregorowicz covered the flanks.
LAAVRENCE 14 Salem SALEM 26
Salem got the jump on Lawience in the first quarter when they took advantage of a fumble on the 30-yard mark. Lawrence came back with a vicious o flense and drove for a T. D. Salem took another Law¬ rence fumble for a score. Callagy scored on an end sweep. McMahon intercepted a pass and knocked down quite a number.

A pass to Gregorwicz scored the onl touch-down for Lawrence. Fhe game was marked by many pass interceptions, and fumbles.

When Coach Ernest J. Perry greeted his first group of track aspirants, he crossed his fingers and hoped for the best. He knew that a great deal of head- scratching would be necessary if he were to successfully place his men and obtain a well-balanced team; for a new ruling of the Headmaster’s Association pro¬ hibited the use of a competitor in more than one running and one field event. Quantity as well as quality was essential.
Returning lettermen included Don Kearny, Bob Gagnon, Allan Locke, Bob McGurren, Don Furnari, and Captain Bob Ryley. These boys were to form the mucleus for the 1948 team.
Coach Perry made two discoveries in the first weeks of practice. One: He had a good shot putter in the blond giant, Ernie Gregorowicz. And two: He had a number of good sprinters headed by the diminutive Lou Sarcione. All other valuable possessions were to be ascertained at the first meet.
Lynn English inaugurated the season. Sarcione, Stella, and Paris swept the dash. Locke and McGurren took second and third respectively in the hurdles, and Lou Jiarusso, a freshman, placed third in the “1000.” Ryley and Lamontagne took third places in the “300” and “600,” while Furnari and Ken Meinelt placed second and third in the mile. Gagnon and Frank Zemis placed first and third in the high jump and Gregorowicz won the shot put. English captured the relay. Final score: English 45, Lawrence .32.
The following week the team took part in the Northeastern Interscholastics at the Boston Garden and failed to score.
The Andover Jayvees provided opposition in the next meet. Sarcione and Stella placed first and third in the dash while Locke and McGurren took second and third in the hurdles. Gidansky and Paris placed first and third in the “300” and Ryley won a slow “600.” Furnari placed second in the “1000” while Meinelt took third in the mile. “Greg” won the shot put and Frank Zemis tied for sec¬ ond in the high jump. Lawrence won the relay. Final score, Lawrence 38y2> Andover 381/2-
Lynn Classical was our next opponent. Locke, McGurren and Dick McCarthy swept the hurdles. Classical’s Paul Pittman, state champion and world’s record holder of the sixty yard dash, won the “40,” but Sarcione and Rhineri placed second and third. Gidansky won the “300” and “Rifle” and Lamontagne placed first and third in the “600.” Furnari took second in the “1000” and Meinelt third in the mile. Gregorowicz won the shot put and Zemis the high jump. Classical won the relay. Final score: Classical 39, Lawrence 38.
We failed to score in the State meet, but we emerged with some consolation as the relay team of Sarcione, McGurren, Gidansky and Ryley won their heat, defeating Lowell and Dorchester.
We suffered our worst defeat of the season at the hands (and elbows) of our deadly rival Lowell. The dilapidated wooden floor on which we ran is audaci¬ ously called a track by Lowell men. But it is hardly deserving of any such illus¬ trious appellation.
Running the dangerous wooden corners with practiced ease, the Lowell boys won every running event except the hurdles which was won by A1 Locke. Ernie Gregorowicz heaved Lowell’s melon-shaped shot but 44 feet for his longest put of the season. Other boys placing were Sarcione, McGurren, Powers, Furnari, Meinelt, Gagnon, Zemis, and Jasinski. Final score: Lowell 551/2, Lawrence 221/2.
We journeyed to Andover the following week for our second meet with the Jayvees. Bob McGurren and Locke placed first and second in the hurdles and

Making the trip to Brunswick, Maine, to run in the Bowdoin Interscholastics were Bob McGurren, Louis Sarcione, Bob Gagnon, Ernie Gregorowicz, and Bob Ryley. Bob Gagnon scored Lawrence’s only point in the high jump. However, Sarcione ran in the finals of the dash and McGurren ran in the semi-finals of the hurdles. Gidansky ran his best time of the year in the “300” and Ryley the best time of his career in the “600.”
If the success of a season is determined by the record of a team, then the year of 1948 was a complete failure for the Lawrence high track squad. But there is more to athletics than just winning and losing. There is the underlying spirit of good sportsmanship in competition that gives purpose to athletics in the high school. Looking at it from the philosophic rather than from the material side, we can say that the season was as successful as any ever experienced at Lawrence High.

The Lawrence High Basketball Team opened its season with a journey to the “Fishermen” of Gloucester where a heartbreaking loss was suffered by the score of 31-30. Captain Sam LoPiano led his mates vainly with eleven points. The team’s tough luck continued as they lost a thrilling overtime contest with the Lynn English five, 41-39. Diminutive Carmen Martellini and Stu Spizer were high scorers for the “Blue and White” with thirteen points each. The team finally broke the ice as they knocked off a Beverly quintet, 37-35. The team continued to roll as they humbled Peabody, 56-38. The highlight of the game was the twenty-five points dropped through the hoop by Martellini. Nevertheless bad luck struck again in the next game as the team lost another overtime thriller to Lynn Classical, 37-36. It was the all-around playing of the team’s guards, Don Shycoff and Gerry Callagy, that stood out in the game. The team then took on a smooth Salem quintet and dropped the decision, 36-27. Martellini again led his mates with fifteen points. Sweet revenge was then secured as we toppled Gloucester, 45-31. It was Captain LoPiano who took scoring honors with seventeen points. We then suffered a loss to Lynn English, 44-30. The team took its fourth win at the expense of Beverly, 45-31. The next game was an upset loss to Peabody, 52-48. The victory trail was hit again as we toppled Harry Agganis and his mates to the melodious score of 52-38, as Captain LoPiano sunk twenty-four points. The team then toppled traditional rival Haverhill, 35-24. This was followed by a victor over city rival Central Catholic, 31-27. Both games being of the thrilling, heart-stopping form and it was the all-around play of the team as a whole that stood out noticeably. The team repeated its victory over Haverhill on their own court, 44-37, with Martellini dropping twenty points through the hoop. In the following two garnet Lowell beat us twice with the identical score of 49-37. Central Catholic then topped us, 42-38, with Don Shycoff playing an outstanding game offensively and de¬ fensively with thirteen points. The season finished as we lost to Salem, 40-31.
In Captain Sam LoPiano at one forward position, we had a good all around player, always aggressive and fighting. At the other forward position. Carmen Martellini, whose 198 points for the season were good enough to rank him sec¬ ond in league scoring. He was the possessor of the best eye on the team, and he frequently made use of it in astounding shots. At center, Stuie Spizer, who stood six feet one inch, and took advantage of his height to work aggressively around the backboards. Guard Don Shycoff was as good as any all-around guard in the league. He was a terror on the defense and always a threat on the offence. Captain elect, Gerry Callaghy was brilliant on defense and always ready to come through in the clutch when needed, and is sure to make a good team leader for the coming season.
Five other boys who received their letters for the season and saw considerable action were, Anthony Vitale, John DeAngelo, Edward Lawlor, Edward Samra, and William Scalora. The only member from this group, returning for another season, is Sophomore Johnny DeAngelo. Thus, around him and Gerry Cal¬ laghy, the only returnee from the first team, will the nucleons of next year’s team be formed.
James F. Jordan was the coach of the team. It was his first year as head coach, and he led the team skilfully to third place in the Essex County League. Alark Devlin was Athletic Director, and Jim Murphy the trainer.

^riLute to ^olin C^ade^
We, the Seniors of the Class of 1948, wish to dedicate this page of our year book to the man who has given up his time unstintingly in its cause. It is difficult to put into words the true appreciation of his guidance.
He has undertaken the task of publishing the class book for the fourth consecutive year. This year, in spite of our late start, he gave us his utmost attention and cooperation. As a teacher he is superb, and as a counselor he gave his much-needed aid in countless ways.
This small dedication is but a paltry bit of what we owe him. Nevertheless, at this time I wish to express the heartfelt thanks of each and every Senior.

In September, 1944, we entered the Oliver School, freshmen. We felt quite diffident among the unfamiliar faces and surroundings.
Confusion and chaos reigned for the first few weeks but after we got our bear¬ ings and used to the novelty of changing rooms each period, the confusion dis¬ appeared.
Although we tried to be very sophisticated we soon realized we had a lot to learn. The maze of rules complicated high school life.
In a short time we became better acquainted with the faculty and classmates. We realized high school life was fun too.
Laura Fredette and Millicent Belanger were on the Lawrencian staff and wrote our freshmen column.
On Thanksgiving Day, Lawrence High defeated Lowell High in a thrilling football game. The final score was 13-12.
Rita Ann Donovan and John Blackington were voted most popular students in the annual contest sponsored by the Lawrencian.
May 8, 1945 is one date in our high school days that will never be forgotten, for that was V-E Day. We were dismissed as soon as the announcement came with great celebration.
At graduation, Robert Ryley and Mary Di Zazzo were awarded the Perkins Prizes.
Sophomore Year
Our summer vacation had ended. The war was over on August 14th, 1945. What fun it was to be back, no longer the little freshmen. We entered the real high school building. We stopped making conscious efforts at being sophisti¬ cated. We began to voice our ideas and opinions without fear. We were sophomores!
The football season commenced with John Langevin as representative of our class. Although Lawrence High lost the Thanksgiving Day game, 14-7, to Lowell High, our spirit remained undaunted in defeat.
The Friday Frolics were a huge success this year. We shall always remember the good times we had there.
Lawrence High baseball team won the Essex County League Championship and went to state tournament. The class was justly proud of two baseball players, John Dean and Edward Sanira.
Rita Ann Donavan was again voted most popular girl, and Walter Solak was voted most popular boy.
At graduation, Mary DiZazzo and Bernard Fionte were awarded the Perkins Prizes.

Junior Year
We came back realizing we were now an important part of the high school fnnction. We were more carefree and jolly this year. We discovered new places to go and new things to do.
This year Lawrence High won, 14-0, on Thanksgiving Day. Upon completion of the football season John Langevin was elected captain for 1947.
The ontstanding event of the basketball season was the tournament. Law¬ rence High team was Essex County champions. Our class was proud of Samuel Lopiano and Donald Shycoff. Sam Lopiano was elected captain for the next year.
The results of the popularity contest were Rita Ann Donovan for the third consecutive year voted most popular girl and Robert McGurren most popular boy.
Robert Ryley and Robert McGurren both were fine trackmen. Robert Ryley was elected captain for next year.
Lawrence High baseball team was second in Essex County League champion¬ ship. John Dean and Edward Samra continued their exceptionally good play¬ ing. Edward Samra was elected captain for the following year.
