Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1863, by

HENRY R. HELLIER,

in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States in and for the State of Maryland.

PEEFACE.

The publisliers, on presenting to the Public the present volume of the " Baltimore City Business Directory" (being the first edition published by them), beg to thank the business men of Baltimore for the liberal support bestowed thereon, and trust that the work will meet with their approval. The labor and expense which have been bestowed in obtaining the names of our business men have been very great through the influence of Mr. Woods, the publisher of the City Directory, who took upon himself the personal trouble of going amongst our business men and informing them that this was an outside arrangement, and requesting them not to subscribe thereto ; notwithstanding the drawbacks, we believe that this Direc- tory is the best ever published in Baltimore, at all events, from the number of our subscribers we feel proud to say that a great need has been felt by the business men of Baltimore for -a reliable Busi- ness Directory.

"We shall continue the work annually, and publish it annually, and with acquaintance hope that we shall receive your cordial support. We will here take occasion to say that all persons authorized to act as agents for this work are furnished with a printed certificate of authority, signed by the publishers, a reference to which will, at all times, protect the public from fraud.

Our experience in the Directory business is second to none, and we hope by strict attention to the wants of the public to always receive their patronage.

Respectfully,

E. M. CROSS & CO., Publishers,
