ECLIPSES FOR 1851. There will be two eclipses of the Sun and two of the Moontht* year:

I. A partial eclipseof thoMoon, Jan. 17th, 1851, at 9 h. 15m. Vwj- Ue on the Eastern continent.

II. An annular eclipse of the Sun, Jan. 31— to us invisible, but m-iy be seen at the cape of Good Hope, Feb. 1, at 5 in the morninjt.

III. A partial eclipse of the Moon, July 12th, llh. 6m. in the af- tRrnoou, and visible.

IV. A total eclipse of the Sun, July 28th. Begins on the earth generally at 12h. 14in. A., in longitude 10(i° west find latitude 2,V north. Central eclipse begins at Ih. 25ra. A., in longitude 137° 4*' ivest, and latitude 53' 43' north. Ends on the earth generally at 4h- olin. Great Sn't Lake City and Deseret will have their share cf this heavenly sight, independent of any other State or nation.

Names and characters of the Planets. 0 @Sun, (J Moon, ■^ Mercury, ? Venus, © Earth, cf Mars, % Jupiter, ^•^ Saturn, I^ - Herschcl.

7 Venus will be the Morning Star until the 11th of October, then Evening Star to the end of tlie year.

The signs, usual in Almanacs, are omitted as matters of ancient fincy, which never had nor never will have a being or body (as re- presented by old Almanac-makers) on earth or in heaven.

Kxri.ANATION OF THE CALENDAR PaGK. Month,

<^,c., length of days and changes of the Moon on the top of the page. The first column contains the days of the week ; the second the day of the month ; the space ad- i 'lining contains notable events, observations, iS:.c.; the third, the rising of the Sun ; the fourth, the southing of t!n' Sun ; t!ie fifth, the setting of the Sun ; the sixth, the s -.uthing of the Moon ; and the seventh, the southing of ■; >ine of tlie planets and li.ved stars.

Tiie abreviations are d. for day, h. for hour, m. for minutes, s. for seconds, and M. morning and A. afternoon.

To read the southing of the Sun : say, on the 2,5th of .Fin. the sun is slower than the clock or watch 12ni. and ;;Si : as appears by the shade of a Dial, on the nieridi- a-i line. Again : On the '3d day of November the sun i: faster than the clocli or watch \6n. \G^., for either a well regulated clock or watch only says llh. A'^m. 449., wfiile the Dial casta its shade on the meridian or XII

»Vloek line. Thus, because the sun does not every day accapj just 24 hours through the year, we have to use a MiMvn for mean, or clock time, instead of dial or apparent tknc.

The southing of the Moon was considered of more im- portance than part setting and part rising, the old fashioiv- ed way.

The elements of the Eclipses are taken from tb* Nautical Almanac.

The most of the arbitrary characters, as well as the «igoa and wonders, are omitted as useless.

THE CENTER OF THE HEAVENS.

Up in the heavens above, Where the life giving pov/er is spread, Undivided, There is a fountain of love, Where the priesthood in virtue, as head, Hath presided, Orex planets and stars, and their beings, forever.

High in those mansions, so bright. Where the footsteps of men never tread, In probation. There is a fountain of light, Where true wisdom and knowledge is spread, In rotation, ISy the millions of worlds and their people, forever -

Right in the centre of this, la a throne, where our Fatlier sits crown'd With his neighbors. Here is the spirit of bliss, Which the wisdom of man never found By his labors. Even Ua-St, whch is lif.' tj creations, forever.
