Writ of plenius certiorari on the petition of Eobert Bertram for the lands, &c. of the said Robert, as his kinsman and next heir and of full age, 6 March, 1 Edw. II. {defective). [Northumberland.] Inq. Tuesday after St. Mark, 1 Edw. II. (defective).

(extent given), held of the king by service of 3 knights' fees. The said lands were in the hand of the late King Edward for four weeks after the said Eobert's death, and afterwards the wardship was granted to Margaret sometime queen of England until the lawful age of the heir, who sold it to Master Eichard de Haveryng, late escheator, who sold it to Sir William de Hamelton, and he to Sir Simon Ward, who still holds the same.

Robert the petitioner is his kinsman, and next heir.

John de Seton says that the said Eobert was 21 on Thursday the feast of St. George last, which he knows because at the command of Robert Bertram he came ou the morrow of St. George to Bothale and bought of him 16 oaks of his forest for 2 marks, for constructing his building of Seton, which was accidentally burned at Christmas before, and was present and saw the same (Robert) baptized in the church of St. Andrew, Bothale, and it is twenty-one years ago last Christmas since the burning of his houses.

Robert de Fenrother says the same, and knows it because at the feast of St. Marcellus (?) before the birth of the said Robert he married Isabel his wife, who died on the day of St. George following, and was buried in the cemetery of St. Andrew, Bothall, on the day the said Robert was baptized, and it is twenty-one years ago at the same feast of St. George.

John de Offeley says the same, and knows it because his father (?) married Ayice his stepmother at the feast of All Saints before the said Robert's birth ; it is twenty-one years ago, and that marriage can never depart from his memory.

Bernard Tuket of Wodhorn says the

same, and knows it because Sir John de Gretham, chaplain, at Christmas .• was instituted perpetual vicar of the church of St. Edehne the Virgm, Wodehorn, and on Sunday before the Ascension follow- ing the witness was at the vicar's feast at Bothal with

Robert Bertram, deceased, and then the said Robert (the petitioner) was 4 weeks old, and it is twenty-one years since Sir John was instituted.

Eobert le Warenner says the same, and knows it because Robert his first- born son was born on the eve of St. George, and the said Eobert on the morrow, and his son was 21 on the said eve last past.

EDWAED II. 17

Maurice de He says the same, and knows it because

Eoger his brother whose heir he is, (died) on Whitsunday after the said Eobert's birth twenty-one years ago at next Whitsunday, and he made his homage to Eobert Bertram, who said that he who ought to be his lord was aged 6 weeks.

William son of Maurice says the same, and knows it because on . . . . . . before the said Eobert's birth he came into England from parts across the sea, and on the morrow of St. George following, on which day the said Eobert was baptized, John de Seton and he feasted at Bothal with Eobfirt Bertram, and it is twenty-one years ago since he came into England.

Simon son of Eichard de Pyndemore says the same, and knows it because as he came from Newbiggin to Pyndemore he saw his own house burning, and endeavoured to save his valuables (?) but could not for no one dared enter the house for the flames, and he lost many goods, and the same after- noon came his servant from Bothal announcing that Alice Goby on, mother of the said Eobert, had born a son, and on the morrow he was present when he was baptized, and Eobert Bertram gave him an oak because his house was burnt, and there he saw John de Seton present, and it is twenty-one years since the burning of his house.

John d6l Side say's the same, and knows it because on Sunday after the said Eobert's birth he fell from his horse between Morpath and Wheteworth, and it is twenty-one years ago, which he well recollects, for the small bone of his leg (?) {exilla tibie) being broken, he still limps.

William son of Eichard de Essynden says the same, and he knows it because Ealph de Essynden, knight, took all his beasts and detained them for 10 marks which he owed him for the farm of his mill, and on the morrow of St. George he went to Sir Eoger Bertram, rector of St. Andrew's, Bothal, to borrow some money, and found, him in the church whilst the said Eobert was being baptized, and the said rector lent him 5 marks ; it is twenty-one years ago since the taking of his beasts and he will all his life remember it.

John le Maresscall of Hayden says the same, and knows it because William his son was born four weeks after the said Eobert, and will be 21 on Sunday before the Ascension next.

Eobert de Balliolo says the same, and knows it because on the day of the said Eobert's birth as he came from Corbryg, robbers attacked him near Stanfordham with bows and arrows, &c. and killed his horse with an arrow, and he scarcely escaped their hands, and the same day reached Morpath on foot, and on the morrow went to Ellyngton by Bothall, where he heard his mass in the church and was present when the said Eobert was baptized, and the robbers' attack happened twenty-one years ago' on the feast of St. George last.

137. RiCHAED son of ElCHAKD DB GeYTON.

Writ of certiorari supermodo et forma captionis to the justiciary of Ireland, 15 May, 2 Edw. II. Ireland. Inq. made at Cassell on Thursday before St. Matthew, 3 Edw. II.

Tipperary. The said Richard the fathet purchased divers tenements in the parts of Cassell and Tiperary of divers men, and held the niece of Reymund de Burgo, a magnate in those parts, as his concubine, of whom he begat the said Richard, and when he was 7 years old, he gave him 2 carucates land in Kilsegan, which are in the king's hand, 160a. land in Balibohull, worth 5 marks but charged with 5 marks yearly rent to Matthew Milet, of whom the king afterwards purchased in fee, 24a. land in Killiveran, 30a. land in Dyngeldergan, 39a. land in Lisbrenan, and 17Ja. land in Hethton and Cnocbrek, from which are due 7s. yearly rent to Lady Maud Wodeford, and assigned to him the said Sir Reymund as guardian, and fully divested himself of the said tenements. Immediately after the death of Richard the father, who was receiver in Ireland for Lady Eleanor sometime queen of England, William de Estden then treasurer of Ireland, took all these tenements into the king's hand, because he believed the said Richard to be answerable to the queen for a debt ; and afterwards the king, by John Wogan, Justiciary of Ireland, gave them, excepting 2 carucates lands in Kilsegan, together with the manor of Rathcon, to Sir Geoffrey le Bret in exchange for the manor of Le Carryk.

Return from the justiciary of Ireland, that the sheriff of Typerary has sent an inquisition sewn to this writ, yet from the memoranda of the exchequer of Dublin it appears that Ralph de- Geyton, brother of Richard the father, asserting himself to be the heir of the said Richard, purchased the said tenements out of the king's seisin, but afterwards the said treasurer so wrought with him that he enfeoffed the late king Edward therein by charter, and afterwards quit-claimed to the king all his right there, who enfeoffed Geoffrey le Bret as aforesaid. The tene- ments of Kilsegan remain still in the king's hand, the said Richard the younger being at that time under age, and he has quit-claimed to the king and the said Sir Geoffrey all his right in Rathcon and Balibohull, because the king has granted him the tenement of Kilsegan.
