Burslem is a town of over 40,000 inhabitants and 3,100 acres, in North Staffordshire. In the year of Grace 1910 it was merged into the County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent, but it still retains its general individuality. It is the old Mother- town of the world-famous Staffordshire Potteries, and was for several centuries by far the most important of the six towns — Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton, and Longton — which go to make up the County Borough.
Burslem is on the Trent and Mersey Canal and has three Railway Stations — Burslem, Longport, and Cobridge, on the North Staffordshire lines. It is in the North- West Division of the County, North Pirehill Hundred and Petty Sessional Division, Wolstanton and Burslem Union, County Court District of Burslem, Rural Deanery of Hanley, Archdeaconry of Stoke-upon-Trent, and Diocese of Lichfield.
It is an ancient Chapelry, and occurs in Domesday as Barcardeslim and in various records and charters as Borewardeslyme, Burewardesley-lime, Bur- wardeslime, Burwareslem, and Burdeslem.
Mr. W. H. Duignan, in his notes on "Staffordshire Place-names," gives the derivation as (Anglo-Saxon) Burhweardes-hlimme — Burhweard's stream.
At the Domesday Survey, Ulviet held it under Robert de Stafford as one-third of a hide ; one villein with four bordars had a single plough team, and there were two acres of alder, or willow trees ; Alward had owned it T.R.E. ; los. was the yearly value.
It was originally an independent manor, but became united with Tunstall by the Lords Audley.
From the Inquisition p.m. of Humphrey de Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, who was slain at the battle of Northampton, loth July, 1460, it will be observed that one of his possessions was half a Knight 's-fee in Borewareslain, held under him by Nicholas Lord Audley. Burslem came under the jurisdiction of Tunstall Court, together with Sneyd, Chell, Bemersley, Wedgwood, Thursfield, Stad- moreslow, Brierehurst, Ranscliff, Oldcott, Chatterley, and Bradwell. The Court at Tunstall was established 37 Henry III., a grant of free warren being given to James de Audley by the King in that year.
The lords Audley acquired the Manor from their kinsmen, the Gresleys, their predecessors and overlords being the Barons of Stafford, to whom they were related by marriage.
The lands within the Manor were copyhold, and for the most part were not enfranchised until the reigns of Queen Elizabeth and King James I., when Ralph Sneyd, Esquire, of Bradwell and Keele, was Lord of the Manor, his father. Sir Wm. Sneyd, Knt., having purchased in 1577 the Manors of Tunstall and Burslem from his nephew, George Touchett, Lord Audley ; or rather two-thirds of the Manor, for one-third of the Manor had descended from the Audleys to the Lords FitzWarren and afterwards to the Earls of Bath ; and was sold by the latter early in the 17th century to Sir John Bowyer, of Knypersley.

ii. Staffordshire Parish Registers.
According to Doomsday, Burslem was held by a freeholder, and the reason for it being afterwards copyhold may have been through the Barons Audley boldly usurping it as such ( Ward). It appears from the Manor Court Rolls to have been customary freehold, and not subject to villeinage.
The chief landowners (mostly by copy of court roll) in Burslem parish and families of some considerable importance were the Burslems, of Burslem and Dale Hall (they owned some 650 acres in or around Burslem), while other principal landowners from a very early period were the Biddulphs, of Biddulph, the Adams family, of Burslem and Tunstall, the Colcloughs, of Burslem, Newcastle, and of Coleclough, also the Crocket and Daniel families. The Wedgwoods, who migrated from Biddulph to Burslem early in the 17th century, were the heirs of the Burslems and Colcloughs.
The Burslem family of Btirslem, of Dale Hall, and Oldcot Park, in Wolstan- ton, appear to have died out in male line many generations ago, but Ward (Hist. Boro. of Stoke-on-Trent) traces their descent in female line to the Hastings family. Earls of Huntingdon.
In the reign of- Elizabeth, Joan, daughter of John Burslem, of Burslem, married (October 20th, 1594) Thomas Adams, Master Potter, of Burslem, and one generation later Thomas Burslem, of Burslem, &c., lacking a male heir, made his two daughters, Margaret, wife of Gilbert Wedgwood, and Katherine, wife of Wm. Colclough, Barrister-at-law, his co-heiresses.
In 1647 the parish of Burslem was visited with the Plague, and many of the inhabitants died, but the parish registers give us no information on the subject, probably because none of the victims were buried in the Churchyard. They were buried near Rushton Grange ; the Roman Catholic Priest, who dwelt there, pronouncing absolution before interment {Ward). The plague was said to have been brought from Italy by a lady who had the care of the children of Mr. Biddulph, who at that time lived at Rushton Grange.
Ward quotes from a document found in Stoke Parish Chest, being an oraer of the Magistrates at the Easter Quarter Sessions, 24 Charles I., confirming the previous order of two Justices of a Petty Session, which had been granted on the application of the overseers of Burslem for taxing twelve neighbouring parishes in aid " for relief of the Poor that were visited with the plague."
In 1272 the Audleys were working a coal mine at Burslem {Staff. Coll., Vol. XL, N.S., p. 239), while in the days of Elizabeth there were many coal mines worked by the Colcloughs, Adams, Crockets, and Wedgwood families. At what period pottery was first made at Burslem and district, it is impossible to say ; but it was undoubtedly at a very early date, and certainly made in 1448, since William Adams and Richard, his brother, paid the Lord of the Manor in that year a fine for procuring clay for that purpose (vide Tunstall Court Rolls — Keele Hall). It would be little more than a pastime for the yeoman farmers and their workmen in those days, but perhaps a means of livelihood to the peasant, and consisted mostly of jowls, water-bottles, and similar articles. It is more than likely that the local manufacture was given considerable impetus at the time of the dissolution, in 1536, of the Cistercian Abbey of Hulton, which lay in the parish, for encaustic tiles of good quality, as well as other pottery, are known to have been made at the Abbey Pottery by the Monks.
In 1 61 7, William Adams is described as a Master Potter (in his will proved March 30th in that year), so also is Thomas Adams (in his will proved March 29th, 1629) ; indeed, from the inheritance which he left to his descendants of lands, pot-houses, workhouses, and the ' 'implements belonging to the trade of pottinge," it would appear that even at so early a date he had been working a factory and employed " hands." He died early in life, but left ample provision for the education of his daughters as well as sons, a somewhat unusual provision for the period. Again, John Colclough, in his will proved 7th May, 1657, left his potting boards and other implements and materials belonging to the trade of potting (lead and lead ore excepted) to his kinsman, Thomas Wedgwood. Quite early in the 17th century, and probably earlier, the industry of Pottery had begun to be important in Burslem, and in the following century, under the able hands of Josiah Wedgwood, William Adams, John Turner, and, later still, Josiah Spode and Thomas Minton, it became world famous.
BuYslem. iii.
The staple trade of Burslem and district is, of course, still China and Earthen- ware, but there are very extensive coal and ironstone mines and furnaces in the immediate district.
Although necessarily a smoky and somewhat dull looking town, it has several fine buildings, and like most Staffordshire industrial towns it is sur- rounded with beautiful country, wooded and hilly, except those portions of it which join on the one side to Tunstall and on the other to Hanley.
There is kept in the safe of the Vestry a Churchwardens' book, the earliest entry being in 1700. It has mostly to do with the purchasing of pews, sundry resolutions in Vestry, the repairs of the roads in the parish, the annual accounts of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish (Burslem, Sneyd, and Hulton), Church Collections for Fires and other ravages at sundry Churches in the Kingdom, (notably one in 1701 for the Church Steeple at Abbots Bromley), Church rates, certain rules concerning the apprenticeship of young Potters, and other similar matters of importance to the locality.
There is given under Hulton in the 1539 Muster Roll of Staffordshire, 80 able-bodied men capable of bearing arms, amongst which we notice the familiar names of Heyth, Thurstfeld, Hanley, Denyell, Beyrdmore, Leycroft, Swynerton, Machyn, Chetwyn, and Twemlow,t while under Tunstall there is given 31, several of whom we observe as belonging to Burslem, notably Thomas Bursale (Burslem), Nicolas Addams, John Crockye (Crockett), James Telreck (Telwright), Ric. Drakeforde.J
The parish church of Burslem is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, hence Burslem Wake, the Patronal Feast Day, is the Sunday after June 24th. ' ' Burs- lem Wakes," generally considered a holiday season,* was held from time imme- morial in the Market Place of the town, and consisted of shows and stalls and other allurements. It commenced on the Saturday before the first Sunday after the 24th June and continued on the Monday and Tuesday following. It was officially abolished in modern times (1870) but was very soon revived, and although not always held in the Market Place the correct dates are recognised, which probably originated in Pagan times, for it is notorious that many of the festivals of the early Christian Church were established to supersede the festivals of Heathendom. Unlike other Churches in the district, St. John's, Burslem, stands in a hollow. The somewhat rude, massive stone tower is almost certainly the original building erected by the Barons Stafford in the 13th century. It is in the Gothic style of architecture, or, according to Lynam, in the last phase of Gothic prior to Renais- sance times. The nave, originally of wood, and thatched, was almost entirely burnt down in the year 1717 (and, according to tradition, not for the first time). It was then re-built, but of brick with a slate roof. It was enlarged and new roofed in 1788, at the cost of £572 9s. 3d. (when Enoch Wood, the well-known Potter, was one of the Churchwardens), the present vestry being built in 1794. In 1878-80 the nave underwent a substantial and thorough restoration, seats being provided for 850 persons. Before Tunstall Church — in the old parish of Wol- stanton — was built in X832, Newchapel (Thursfield) and Burslem Churches were the nearest for the inhabitants of Tunstall, and so we find that several Tunstall families had pews in Burslem Church.
The parish is now divided into four ecclesiastical districts, viz., S. John the Baptist, S. Paul's, Dale Hall, Holy Trinity, Sneyd, and Christ Church, Cobridge. It comprises the Townships of Burslem, Hamlet of Sneyd, ville of Rushton Grange, and the township of Abbey Hulton, which last is tithe free.
It was not until 1807 that an Act of Parliament was passed for making the parish of Burslem a distinct Rectory from Stoke.
William Adams, of Cobridge Hall and Brick House, Burslem, § purchased the advowson in 1807, and was therefore the first patron of the living.

* In the Staffordshire Potteries (County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent), Stoke Wake, August 1st (Lammas Day), Dedication to St. Peter and Vincula, the ancient {parish Church of Stoke-on-Trent, marks the great annual lioliday.
§ William Adams was baptised at S. John's, December 9th, 1750, being the only son of John Addams, of Brick House, in Burslem, and of Longbridge Hayes, and Dorothy, his wife, daughter of Wm. Murrell, of Bagnall Hall, a noted Justice of the Peace at the time of the Jacobite Rising in 1745, and High sheriff of Staffordshire, 1742.
IV.
Staffordshire Parish Registers.
The ancient Chapelry was, however, always held to be a separate Parish for the maintenance of its poor, and it does not appear that it was ever con- tributory to the Mother Church of Stoke. The three hamlets of Burslem, Sneyd, and Hulton were called upon to contribute to the repair of Burslem Church from time immemorial. An ancient custom prevailed by which three Church- wardens were annually appointed, one for Burslem, one for Sneyd, and one for Hulton, and the occupiers or owners of certain ancient messuages and farms in these three Townships were called upon to serve the ofl&ce in rotation. This custom, with a list of the names of the people liable to serve is recorded in the parish register, copied out from an earlier book in 1657 by the Incumbent, the Rev. John Stevenson, as being the ancient order for the choosing of Church- wardens, and is here given : —

Staffordshire Parish Registers.
Before the Act of 1807, already referred to, for the makmg of Burslem a distinct Rectory, the Incumbent or perpetual Curate was nominated by the Rector of Stoke, and the Incumbent of Burslem had the tithes, Easter Dues, and surplice-fees for his proper use.
The Incumbent in the middle of the i8th century, the Rev. Thomas Spencer, was very particular about this. There is a note in the parish register (at end Vol. II.) to the following effect :—
' ' The inhabitants within this parish of Burslem had usually paid sixteen " pence a day work (the Staffordshire Acre being, at this Time, a Day Work & *' half), for the oats growing within the said Parish. To prevent their claiming *' a Modus for the same, I made them pay in the year 1741 for each day's work, ' ' of Oats, eighteen pence ; for Barley, Two Shillings, & for Wheat & Rye Three '* Shillings. In earlier days it would appear that the tithes were collected by the Rector of Stoke who redistributed them to the Incumbent of Burslem, for we notice that at the Little Court held at Tunstall on Monday after the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 6 Edward IV. (March 30th, 1405), William de Adams, of Burslem, had to appear in Court concerning a charge made by the Rector of Stoke inasmuch as he had not paid tithe. The same trouble occurred in the middle of the 17th century (Mainwaring, Rector of Stoke v. Shaw Trial, June 15th, 1640, and Hargreaves v. Wedgwood Trial), but these Trials were whether or no the Churchyard House and Longcroft Estates were Church property. The Mainwaring suit came before Lord Finch, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. It appeared that one John Shaw had somehow acquired the Churchyard House after the death of his brother-in-law, the Rev. Thomas Astbury, who was Incum- bent of Burslem in 1555, and lived in the " Priest Chamber " at the Churchyard House. He, John Shaw, certainly married the Curate's sister, and, presumably, his heiress, Elizabeth Astbury, and the Shaws dwelt at the Churchyard House. Longcroft was also near the Church, and was originally part of the same estate ; it was one of the Burslem properties of the Adams family, and from the answer of Robert Adams at the Trial in 1640 he said he did pay an acknowledgment in tythe to the Stoke Rector. It seems that the Suit ended in a compromise ; the reputed owners — Adams, of Longcroft, and Wedgwood, heirs of Shaw — paying some acknowledgment or compounding with the Rector. From further information given at this Trial it showed that Lord Audley, about 1450, gave the Churchyard lands to Thomas Crockett and his heirs, the latter paying 20s. a year to the Incumbent of Burslem Church to be prayed for, for ever. While these trials were going on in the middle of the 17th century the Curate was without a recognised dwelling until Mrs. Catherine Egerton (d. of John Wedg- wood, of Burslem) left in her will, proved 14th May, 1756, to John Henshall, of Newchapel, and Thos. Wedgwood, of Churchyard, £200 in trust to buy land and build thereon a dwelling house for the Minister or Curate of Burslem. But the Incumbent only enjoyed this for a few years, for it was discovered to be void under the Mortmain Act, and the property was resumed by her heir at law, Mr. Thos. Wedgwood, of Overhouse.
It was not until William Adams, the patron of the new Rectory, gave the land and £250 towards its building in 1827 that a permanent Clergy house (Rectory) was built.
It was on land originally called Wilberstones, but now called Middleport, and lay below the Church.
It was pulled down in 1905, its grounds now forming Middleport Park, and the Rectory is now in Waterloo Road.
Mrs. Egerton presented to the Church the Communion plate, bearing inscrip- tions recording her donation. It consists of flagon chalice and paten, and is still used.
A list of the Burslem Charities is given in the Report of the Commissioners, published in 1825. There were six in all : — (i) John Colclough, of Burslem, 1665-6 ; (2) John Wedgwood ; (3) Catherine Egerton, i755 ; (4) R- Cartwright, of Sneyd ; (5) Thomas Leigh, of Jackfield, 1720; (6) William Adams, Clerk, 1722.
viii. Staffordshire Parish Registers.
The Church possess six Bells, which were cast in 1827-8. Prior to that date there were four, which were cast in 1720, but which had become cracked and discordant. These four bells were inscribed as follows :—
1. Mr. Timothy Keen, Minister, 1720.
2. Prosperity to the Church of England.
3. Luke Bennett, Benefactor to the Church and Bells.
4. John Marsh, Ralph Adams, and Samuel Malkin, Churchwardens,
1720.
The present six bells (cast in 1827-8) have the following wording thereon : —
1. William Dobson, founder, Downham, Norfolk.
2. Peace & good neighbourhood.
3. William Dobson, founder, Downham, Norfolk.
4. William Dobson, founder, Downham, Norfolk, 1828.
5. My song shall be always of the loving kindness of the Lord.
6. Revd. Edwd. Whieldon, Rector ; Saml. Jones, Curate ; John B.
Marslen, assistant Curate ; Messrs. Levi Hanby, Jas. Clews, Thos. Hancock, & Thos. Weatherby, Churchwardens, 1828.
Few families appear to have been allowed the privilege of being buried within the Church of Burslem, but Wm. Colclough, Barrister-at-law, who died 1662 (of a family already referred to, and of some importance in North Stafford- shire, being descended from a long line of M.P.'s, Lords of the Manor of Hanley, and Mayors of Newcastle-under-Lyme), a cousin of Sir Caesar Colclough, Bart., of Tintern Abbey, co. Wexford, appears to have been buried in the Church.
From the will of Thomas Burslem, proved May i6th, 1555, it would appear he was entitled to the same privilege, and Nicolas Adams, of Burslem and Sneyd, in 1567 (will proved May 12th, 1568). There are, unfortunately, no monuments to these families ; probably if there were any such they were destroyed in the fire of 1717. There, however, were known to have b-^en some in the Church prior to the 1878-80 Restoration. The only ones now remaining are a small 19th century tablet to the memory of Mr. Daniel Haywood and Sarah, his wife, and a flat stone, ' ' To the memory of the Rev. Richard Bentley, Minister of Burslem, who died April 27th, 1780, aged 35," and in the Vestry a floor stone with the following inscription : — " Here lies the body of Thomas, brother of John Wedgwood, who died April 8th, 1776, aged 68 years, also Mary, the wife of the above Thomas Wedgwood, who departed the 6th July . . . ."
Mf. E. R. Suffling, in his " English Church Brasses," p. 54, describes the armour of a Knight in Burslem Church, Staffs. ; indeed, he gives an illustration of it, the brief description under the illustration is as follows : — * ' Unknown " Knight, c. 1420. Height, 4 ft. Burslem Church, Staffs.
" He wears the Lancastrian S.S. collar with the initials R.S. on his sword "sheath, and having a little brayette of two plates and escalloped condieres."
It is, however, quite unknown at Burslem, and may have reference to some brass elsewhere.
The Churchyard, which is about four acres, is the burial ground of many notable 17th and i8th century master Potters. There are tombs still to be seen of the Warburtons, Adams, Stevensons, Wedgwoods, Woods, Daniels, Malkins, Breezes, and many others. There is at the south door of the Church an altar tomb to the memory of Margaret Leigh, of Jackfield, who was buried 1st April, 1748. There is a well-known tradition, that after the body had been interred some days it was taken up and placed in its present transverse position to satisfy the ghost of the deceased which found no rest until it was accom- plished.
An interesting stone coffin, hewn to the shape of the human body, internally, six feet three inches long but only 14 inches across the shoulders, is thought to have been brought from the neighbouring (now demolished) Abbey of Hulton, and may be the coffin which contained the body of Lady Elizabeth, relict of Nicolas, 5th Baron Audley, who was buried in the Choir of Hulton Abbey.
Burslem. ix.
Burslem was the birth-place of Josiah Wedgwood, probably the greatest Potter the world has known, whose baptism occurs in the register, July I2th, 1730.
He worked the historic Brick-House Works, Burslem (called Brick-House because the house attached was said to be the first house entirely built of brick in Burslem), for some ten years prior to his building Etruria. It was at the Brick-House that he was joined by his partner, James Bentley, and made Potter to her Majesty Queen Charlotte.
The factory was built by John Adams (baptised at the Church, August 22nd, 1624) in 1657, probably on the site of an older factory, and was let to Josiah Wedgwood when the Adams heir was a minor (v. Meteyard, " Life of Wedg- wood," Vol. I., p. 329, and W. Turner, F.S.S., " William Adams, an Old English Potter," p. 174). It was at the Brick House and at Cobridge that Adams begun in 1775 to decorate his productions with the " transfer print " (the first attempt in Stafiordshire — v. Wm. Turner, F.S.S., " Transfer Printing," p. 78, and Shaw, " Hist. Staff. Potteries, 1829," p. 212), which Joseph Mayer, F.S.A., in his history of the Art of Pottery in Liverpool, says has helped to make English pottery famous throughout the civilised world ; while R. W. Binns, F.S.A., in his "Century of Pottery in the City of Worcester," states it has done almost as much for British pottery as the discovery of printing itself had done for literature.
The Brick House and Works, Burslem, were pulled down about i860, and the Burslem Museum and Wedgwood Memorial Institute stands upon part of its site.
Other eminent Staffordshire Potters born at Burslem were William Adams, afterwards of Tunstall, baptised June 15th, 1746 ; Enoch Wood, baptised February 4th, 1759.
Of the other Churches, S. Paul's. Dale Hall (made an Ecclesiastical parish 24th January, 1845), was built in 1827-8, at a cost of £14,000, upon land given by William Adams, Esq. The land was the original patrimony of the Burslems, and according to tradition the Church is built on almost the actual site of old Dale Hall. The Church will seat about 2,000 persons ; it is a handsome building of Hollington stone in the Perpendicular style of architecture. A rectory house was also built, £600 being given towards its erection by Mr. Adams. The living is in the gift of the Rector of Burslem.
Holy Trinity, Sneyd, is now an Ecclesiastical parish, constituted 23rd May,
1844, and built at a cost of over £5,000. The Church is of stone in the Decorated style. The interior has been greatly enriched of recent years, and has many beautiful stained glass windows.
The Hamlet of Sneyd, which gave its name to the well-known family of Sneyd (Sneyd, of Sneyd, Bradwell, Tunstall, Keele, &c., one of our oldest English families), lies on the eastern side of the old township of Burslem ; it is mentioned in the foundation Charter of Hulton Abbey, a.d. 1223, when the Wood of Sneyd was granted to the Abbot and Monks along with the vills of Hulton and Rushton. Hulton Abbey, in the lordship of Hulton and in the parish of Burslem, was founded by Henry de Audley for Cistercian Monks.
Hulton was purchased in the year 161 8 by Ralph Sneyd, of Keele, from Sir Walter Tixall, Bart., the descendant of Edward Tixall, who had received a grant of the Monastery from King Henry VIII. at the Dissolution. Only part of the foundations of the Abbey remain to-day. Ward, in his ' ' History of the Borough of Stoke-on-Trent," gives a fairly full account of it.
Christ Church, Cobridge, is an Ecclesiastical parish, formed 24th January,
1845, from the Lordship of Hulton and ville of Rushton. The building is a plam one of brick with stone dressings. The Church was opened in 1840. Of recent years it has been enlarged and the interior considerably beautified. The living is in the gift of the Rector of Burslem.
The Burslem registers, on the whole, are in good condition, except the earliest book, which is made up of loose sheets interleaved with white paper and carefully repaired. Originally, it consisted of one section of 24 leaves, size 12 by 8, to which single or double sheets were added from time to time. The book was sewn with thick cord round the section and had no cover. The earliest sheet bears the date 1636. There must have been earlier sheets, indeed, it is highly probable
X. Staffordshire Parish Registers.
the register originally began in 1538-9, or at least in 1555, but they were missing as early as 1703, for when Wm. Kelscill, of Balterley, came to the Church to do his transcript the earliest pages he found were Baptisms in 1581. He copies them from that date to 1697. Marriages, 1578— 1695, and Burials, 1578 to 1697. Besides Burslem, Mr. Kelsall thoughtfully transcribed Audley, Betley, Norton- in-the-Moors, Madeley, and Keele in North Staffordshire, and some Cheshire registers ; they are all in one book, and kept at Aqualate Hall. It is through the kindness of Theodosia, Lady Boughey, and Col. Twemlow, F.S.A., D.S.O., of Peatswood, that our transcription of them could be taken. Mr. Kelsall was a very careful and painstaking transcriber, but used many contractions. His transcription is, of course, invaluable for Burslem, as the earlier book was lost in the fire of 171 7 already alluded to.
The other registers at the Church (originally of loose sheets) consists of a velliun bound book, 14 by 7\, Births, 1701 — 1767,
Marriages, 1702 — 1753-4,
Burials, 1702 — 1767, a book, the entries of which were carefully kept with some exceptions, especially in the interim caused by the Rev. Timothy Keen accepting Norton-in-the-Moors in 1733, and the coming of Rev. Thos. Spencer in 1738.
The later registers are similar to those generally used.
The best thanks of the Society are due to the Rector of Burslem, the Rev. Arthur Williams, for giving access to the books, the Rev. J. H. P. O'Connor, of Wolstanton, for transcribing the bulk of the register, and to Miss Cecily Adams for finishing it on Mr. O'Connor leaving Staffordshire through ill-health, and to the Rev. C. N. Were for his transcription from the Diocesan registry where the original in the late 17th and early i8th centuries was undecipherable, as indicated in the text.
The Editor copied the Kelsall transcripts at Peatswood.
The earliest incumbent of Burslem we have so far been able to discover is that of Thomas Heath in 1532.*

Here begins the transcription of the original Register at Burslem.
The following note occurs at the beginning : —
This Register was made about the year 1635 or 1636 and consisted originally of i section of 24 leaves, size 12 by 8, and was added to from time to time on single or double sheets. The Book was sewn with thick cord round the section without any Cover whatever. I notice one or two leaves have been taken out, although the register appears to be complete. Repaired by Joseph Edwin Birch. October ist, 1885. [Note : — Where an entry has been taken from the Kelsall Transcript owing to the original being undecipherable it is denoted by *.]
