Motor — Iver Johnson, 7l/2 H.P., 334 inch bore, 3% inch stroke. Long stroke and compact

crank construction permit very high compression, resulting in exceptional power,

speed, flexibility and long life. Cylinders — Cast integral with head from finest quality of gray iron. Accurately bored

and ground glass smooth. Very large cooling surfaces, the air circulating completely

around valve chambers. Cylinders offset to allow left fly-wheel to splash oil into

forward cylinder, and right flywheel into rear cylinder, insuring perfect oiling of both

cylinders. Crank — Double-crank pin allows one piston to complete its exhaust stroke at the same

instant that the other piston completes its power stroke. Results in a perfectly even

delivery of power, with no wastage. Crank Case — Oil tight, and made of aluminum with a removable oil window which is

fitted to the plug so plug can be removed without disturbing glass for washing out

crank case. Pistons — Each has three eccentric rings, finished by special process. Wrist pins V/2 inch

by 1 inch, hollow and glass hard, being held in place by large taper head screws and

positively locked. Pitman Rods — Drop forged, I-beam pattern, and extra long, preventing excessive side

piston thrust. Has deep oil channel on each side, conducting oil to the crank and

wrist pins, and is fitted with bronze bearings. Flywheels — Perfectly turned and balanced, the weight, 22 pounds, being chiefly in the

rim. Left flywheel positively oils the front cylinder and right flywheel oils the rear

cylinder. Bearings — Fine phosphor bronze, the crank shaft and pins longest and largest in any

motorcycle and are integral with the crank, made of Vanadium steel left soft to insure

great strength and have glass hard sleeves shrunk onto the crank shaft, absolutely

preventing wear. All wearing parts interchangeable. The crank shaft and pins

constantly float in oil which is supplied by splash of flywheel. Valves— All valves are mechanically operated, are interchangeable, and are forged from

nickel steel. The valves are \$4 inch diameter, a 30 degree seat and 34 inch lift.

Valve stems are protected from burnt gases and carbon by outer sleeves. The stems

extra long and hardened on lower ends and run in long hardened sleeves with pro- vision for oiling stems.

Iver Johnson Motor Cycles

Valve Gams — All cams and internal gear are forged from a single piece of Vanadium steel, wearing parts are large and substantial. Cams are arranged around the periphery of an internal gear and the large diameter gives a quick opening and quick closing valve. Tappets are 3^ inch square, hollow, and provided with adjusting screws. They are tempered glass hard and run in extra long bronze bushings, and are fitted with cam rolls.

Breathers — Mechanical. The intake tappets form a slide valve for releasing the pressure in crank case. Breather pipes connect with intake pipe. No oil is wasted by being blown out.

Lubrication — Mechanical force feed oil injector driven by motor which feeds according to speed of motor. Hand pump to assist motor on hills. Splash oil system to cylinder and crank, with oil ducts leading to every working part.

Muffler — Improved Iver Johnson, entirely contained in the exhaust pipe, wonderfully silent and without back pressure.

Ignition — High tension Bosch Armored Magneto placed low in front of motor and driven by three gears on ball bearings in oil- tight case. The magneto gear case is attached to the crank case by a tapered ground connection and held with one bolt. Magneto can be adjusted by removing small cap on case without removing parts.

Carburetor — Schebler float feed. Hand operated auxiliary air valve operated by lever on side of intake pipe thins mixture at high speeds and adds to speed possibilities of the machine.

Tank — Iver Johnson combination gasoline and oil. Pressed steel copper plated inside and out, and tinned on the inside to prevent rusting. Capacity 23^ gallons gasoline, and 2 quarts of oil.

Transmission and Clutch — Roller chain with planetary undergear and free motor. Both sprockets are large, saving wear and breakage of chain. No part of load carried by the crank shaft. Geared 1-4.25, 31 tooth front, 35 tooth rear sprockets to permit easy starting and excess power on the hills. Options. 31 tooth rear gear 1-3.75; 39 tooth rear gear 1-4.75; 43 tooth rear gear 1-5. The free engine consists of self-con- tained planetary gearing controlled by a positive band brake. A pawl enables the ' rider in cold weather, or when the engine is stiff and cold, to turn the engine over at speed of two with every revolution of the starting pedals, until the engine takes hold, when the pawl is automatically released, permitting free motor without extra clutch.

Kick Starter — Consisting of one segment and one gear. Folding foot lever.

Control — Outside grip control, with telescoping steel rods, and ball and socket joints, very sensitive and direct, with no tendency to lose adjustment by wide turns and vibration. All joints held from rattling by springs. No lost motion.

Handle Bar — 25 inches, made from 1 inch, 14 gauge seamless tubing, tapered from head to grip. Motorcycle 8 inch rubber grips.

Frame — Iver Johnson Truss, 1 3^s inch, 14 gauge seamless tubing, reinforced at every point of strain. All connections drop-forged, long and tapered to a thin edge. Saddle position 293^2 inches, height of frame 19 inches, road clearance 5 inches, wheel base 56 to 58 inches. Powerful truss reinforcement.

Front Fork — Iver Johnson Truss Spring fork, with 5 leaf Vanadium steel spring, rebound taken by 4 long leaves, and a short leaf to insure strength and to distribute properly the strain. Reinforced at crown and safety stud in stem. Resilient and powerful.

Wheels — 28 inch standard spokes, C. C. steel rims enameled same color as frame. Corbin band brake on rear hub. Auxiliary foot-lever control.

Guards— Wide front and rear, deep pattern and chain guard. Splasher on front guard and extension over front wheel.

Breather — Mechanical. The intake tappet forms a slide valve for releasing the pressure in crank case. No oil is wasted by being blown out.

Lubrication — Positive hand pump feed to the crank case. Splash oil system to the cylinder and crank.

Muffler — Improved Iver Johnson, wonderfully silent and without back pressure. Cut-out operated by foot.

Transmission and Clutch — V belt with Iver Johnson free engine clutch. Our clutch is built on a new principle. Pulley runs free on roller bearings and has a large plate or cone on each side, the inside frictional surface being larger than the pulley, and the outside frictional surface being of the same size as the pulley, thus giving five times the frictional surface between pulley and cones as between pulley and belt. The pulley can be allowed to slip for slow speeds without burning the fibre discs. The discs are shellacked to the plates and can be removed easily. The pulley has adjustment to take up wear of discs to prevent slipping.

Control — Outside grip control with telescoping steel rods, and ball and socket joints, very sensitive and direct, with no tendency to lose adjustment by wide turns and vi- bration. All joints held from rattling by springs. No lost motion.

Handle Bar — 25 inches, made from 1 inch, 14 gauge seamless tubing, tapered from head to grip. Motorcycle 8 inch rubber grips.

Our Motor Attachment Includes Every Part Required to Convert Your Bicycle

Into a Practical Motorcycle

The Model B Shaw Motor Attachment consists of the following described parts:

Shaw Motor — 2^2 H.P. all finished, assembled and tested, ready to be clamped on bicycle frame.

Carburetor, Lunkenheimer Automatic Mixing Valve Type — -Simple and reliable, anyone can understand it. We furnish any make of carburetor when desired, but recommend the Lunkenheimer on account of its simplicity and reliability.

Muffler — Our own make complete with exhaust pipe to fit. It reduces the exhaust to a soft puffing, which is very desirable.

Idler — Hand operated, gives free engine.

Belt — V shape, made of special tanned, tough and flexible leather that does not lose power like most belts. It is strong and durable. This belt is used on several makes of stan- dard motorcycles that are prominent in the United States.

Rear Pulley Rim — Made of steel, complete with stays.

Tank — With gasoline and oil compartments ready to clamp to top tube of bicycle frame. If your bicycle has double or truss bar we will furnish a special tank for it.

Battery Case — Made of strong fiber insulation to protect the battery and prevent short- circuiting.

Battery -Consists of two standard size dry cells, put in fiber case and wired.

Spark Coil — Best made, wired ready for use, guaranteed by makers for five years. It requires a good coil to do good work. This coil costs more than others, but is the cheap- est in the end. There is practically no wearing out to this coil.

Spark Plug — Red Mead, they last for years.

Grip Control — Fitted with Rough Rider Rubber grips. With ours the rider can increase or decrease the speed or stop the motor entirely by a simple twist of the wrist.

Oiler -Sight iced, reach' to screw into crank case and connect up to oil tank by simply screwing the union coupling up.

Clamps and full set with bolts are included.

All pipes, Compression Union Couplings, etc., are included, all joints are made so there is no trouble in making the connections.

The Model M Shaw Motor Attachment is the same as Model B, except instead of battery case, battery and spark coil, it is equipped with a high grade high tension magneto, which is made especially for us by one of the most prominent manufacturers of magnetos in the United States. They give a hot spark at low as well as high speed, which enables the motor to be slowed down very nicely. Complete Attachment weighs 40 pounds.

Fits any Frame

The Shaw Attachment fits any frame, and the clamps are suitable for all sizes of tubing. It fits bicycle frames from 17 to 26 inches in height. No brazing or changing of the frame is needed.

It weighs less than other motors and is arranged to balance perfectly, thus avoiding the vibration so common in most motors.

The parts are assembled as much as possible before shipment, so as to save you any unnecessary work.

Fuel Supply

We furnish a gasoline tank holding sufficient fuel (about 5 pints) for a run of 75 miles. The lubricating oil compartment holds about one pint, enough for 125 miles. The oil feed is automatic — an absolute necessity if comfort and convenience are to be considered.

The Power Transmission

A flexible belt, made of very tough, durable leather, runs over deep V grooved pulleys, transmitting the power to the rear wheel.

Flat belts lose power and should be avoided.

Proper tension of the belt is secured by hand lever operated idler. By using as clutch gives free engine and the machine may be started same as an automobile.

The Control

Simplicity of control is very important. It adds to the comfort, the security of motor- cycling.

We have solved this problem with the Shaw Grip Control. We furnish long rubber grips to take the place of the regular grips.

The rider can start or stop the motor by a simple turn of the wrist.

You can apply the Coaster Brake and stop the motor, or a sharp turn of the control grip in either direction will do it.

Running Qualities

The Shaw will take you over city streets or ordinary country roads and up hills of 20 per cent grade. It is a " flying machine on land." Safe, speedy and secure. It may be speeded up to 35 miles an hour or slowed down to 4. No ordinary road is too rough for it, nor hill too steep.

Construction of Motor

The materials used in these motors are the best we can procure. The best is the cheapest in the end.

Our motors are made on the interchangeable plan. By using special templates and jigs, the parts are machined and ground to a standard so that all parts are sure to fit pro- perly.

All cams, levers and working parts are subject to much wear, and are carefully case hardened to give long life. Many motors on the market have soft steel and brass exhaust cams, and after a little use the cams become worn so that the exhaust valve opens too late and closes too soon. This does not happen to the Shaw Motor.

Our exhaust cam is milled to a special form so that it opens the valve quietly and quickly and closes it quietly, thus giving the maximum power and without strain to the valve and parts.

Valve Gears — Cut from solid steel accurately fitted.

Cylinder — Analyzed close grain grey iron, cast in baked mould; machined to a perfect fit. Piston and Rings — Analyzed tough grey iron; machined to fit cylinder accurately. Crank Case-r-Light weight, highest grade aluminum, same as used in the best automobile

motors. Shafts — Special highest grade steel, well finished, making them very long lived. Commutator — -Pure platinum contact points that make a positive electrical connection

inside the dust proof case. Cam and contact spring are carefully tempered. Spark Plug — Red Head. Some have been used for more than six seasons. Connecting Rod — Drop forged in one solid piece, bronze bushed; no nuts to get loose. Valves — Poppet type; drop forged, accurately machined and ground to a perfect fit. Lubrication — Automatic; sight feed; requires no attention after being adjusted.

The New Departure Coaster Brake

The New Departure Coas- ter Brake is the heart of the modern bicycle. This little de- vice takes the place of the hub in the rear wheel, and resembles the hub in size and appearance. It is of steel, constructed to withstand hard usage for years. The mechanism is simple; each of the few parts is large and strong.

New Departures make rid- ing safe, whether speeding along level roads or coasting down steep hills. It halves the pedaling work of the rider, minimizes fatigue and prevents serious accidents. It saves strain on the wheel, and gives the rider absolute control of his bicycle on any road and under all circumstances. Nearly four million New Departures have been sold and the demand is steadily increasing. New Departures are liberally guaranteed for one year against defective workmanship or material.

Sprockets are supplied Y% inch, j^- inch and 34 inch thick. By the aid of detachable sprockets provision is made for fitting regular hubs with 1% inch, \Yi inch, 1% and 1% inch chain line, and special hubs with 1^ inch, 13^ inch and \% inch chain line.

The Ye inch offset sprocket provides for the medium measurements of chain line, and sprockets with t& mcn offset provide for the narrow and wide chain lines. This hub can be taken apart and put together again without the aid of tools.

THE STURMEY ARCHER TRICOASTER

The "Tricoaster" contains some of the most important improvements in variable gears. The brake has been so designed that it has a positive release, but at the same time is immensely powerful. If necessary the wheel can be skidded, or, on the contrary, the brake applied with practically the same delicate touch as the usual hand-applied rim brake. In addition to its own particular advantages, it possesses all those to be found in the ordinary Sturmey-Archer three-speed gear.

Note.^The Three-speed Gear and "Tricoaster" can be supplied for any width of back jaw down to 4 inches. any imperfection or defect in material or workmanship of such tire not caused by misuse or neglect.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORDERING TIRES FOR ENGLISH BICYCLES

Unlike Canadian or American, on English bicycles the circumference of the rim changes according to the size of tire fitted — the 1^ rim is greater in circumference than 13^, and the 1 ^2 than the 1%. The circumference of English size steel rims for Dunlop wire-on tires is as follows: — ■

1^-78 27/32 inches; 13^-80 9/32 inches; 1^-81 3 32 inches.

This measurement is taken by passing a tape measure around the extreme edge of the rim — or by mark- ing the rim — giving it one complete revolution on a board and taking the exact distance between the starting and finishing points.

In some cases the markings on the old tire will give this information.
