Introductory
THIS NINETEENTH issue of the Greater Calgary City Directory comprising the City proper, and all suburbs is presented to the public with the belief that it will meet the demands of the most exacting and will fulfill the requirements of all its users.
The information in this book is gathered as far as possible by actual canvass, and is compiled in a way !to ensure maximum accuracy. Wlhile the publishers will in no way be held responsible for any errors that may occur, they will be glad to have any inaccuracies brought to their attention, so that they may be corrected in succeeding editions.
The canvass for the present book was made under favorable conditions, with a crew of efficient canvassers, under the immediate supervision of carefully trained examiners.
The results of the canvass were most satisfactory and the manner in which the information checked in, proved the thoroughness of the work.
Upon examination and use as a work of reference, the directory will be found to contain a thorough and complete store of information regarding all the interests of the city. It is devoted to the advancement of all the city’s vital interests and has in each issue kept pace with its progress.
Through the exchange of directories with the various directory libraries throughout the United States and Canada and the sale of the Calgary Directory to many institutions, hotels and stores in large cities, the directory is circulated throughout the country and serves as a lasting advertisement for our city.
The canvass for the 'Calgary Directory includes the entire City, so that the name of each person employed should be taken twice ; once at the dwelling and again at the place of business. After the canvass has been completed, this information is compiled and it is necessary that there be two slips for each person 'employed. The information taken at the residence and place of business is compared before the duplicate is laid aside. "When a discrepancy is found, a special messenger is dispatched to correct the conflicting information, or if th'e name has not been taken at both places, to retake it at the home or business place.
The new information is checked with the previous directory and each name in the old directory is accounted for.
It is this careful superintendence and revision which makes the directory estimate of population higher than the census figures.
The directory estimate of population is based on the actual number of names contained in the book, which is multiplied by a common multiple to allow for the married women and small children whose names do not appear.
Based upon the names contained in the pages of this book, it is estimated that the population of Greater iCalgary is 7'5,'839. This includes considerable terri¬ tory beyond the city limits, which is canvassed in order that the names of all people doing business in Calgary may be obtained for the directory.
The Publishers desire to thank their patrons and the general public for the courtesy extended at all times to their representatives, and to express their ap¬ preciation for the confidence which the business and professional men of Calgary have always shown in their publications.
Respectfully, The Publishers,
July 30th, 1924.
