The publishers herewith submit the XXY Annual Edition of their City of Winnipeg Directory. The work has been carefully, done, and [e trust will meet with the approbation of our subscribers. Our last aEs City Directory contained 18,127 addresses, this year’s 21,371. ur agents found fewer vacant premises than in any former year. In e following pages will be found statistics showing the city’s progress building, banking, postal, education, etc.
We have much pleasure in calling attention to the new features have added this year. Our aim is, to have the Winnipeg Directory ond to none in Canada. We have the facilities and experience to it and look to the business! community to do their share.
s your own interest as well as ours, see that our name is on the order ore signing. We do not make promises in advance of publication at we will do, but can assure our patrons that we will do in the future we have done in the past, give them the best book possible for the pat- nage we have.
We would call the attention of our patrons to the classified portion the Directory, where the various lines of business are classified un- jf r the different lines.
Thanking our patrons who have given us their liberal financial iipport, we confidently place this year’s Directory before them, feeling pnfident that it is second to no other work of its kind.
Yours Respectfully,
HENDERSON PUB. CO. (Ltd. Lty.) Winnipeg, January 21, 1903.

POPULATION.
There has been a substantial increase in the population of Win¬ nipeg during the past year, as is shown by the increase in the number of names in the Directory.
This volume has 19,557 individual names (exclusive of names of firms and companies), an increase of 2,939 over last year, which indi¬ cates an increase of about 9,000 in population.
We give below a table showing the number of names in the Direc¬ tory for the past five years, also for the years 1881, 1891, 1901.
We do not pretend to take a census of the City every year, but base our calculations on the number of names in the Directory each year. Each city using a different multiplier, varying from 2 7-8 to 4, the low multiplier being used in cities where the names of domestics are in¬ serted in the Directory. Our estimate is based on multiplying by 3}, which we consider about right for this city.
